POPFEST: DOPE MANILA & DR. MARTENS COLLABORATION

Where Mei Bastes goes, the scene will follow. After a brief respite from the wildly celebrated gig series Meiday! Meiday!, it’s only right for the queen to return, this time looking to expand her reign. Enter DOPE MNL, a potent production with a keen ear cocked to all genres of local independent music. Having produced three gigs in the first month of its birth, DOPE MNL is seeking to expand its repertoire with the help of like-minded benefactors, reviving Meiday’s legacy of keeping the local music scene fierce and free.

In collaboration with Dr Martens Philippines, young firebrand production DOPE MNL is about to re-ignite the music scene with POPFEST: a music festival patterned after NYC Popfest but with Manila’s madness, featuring the best and brightest of local talent. In the spirit of Meiday! Meiday!’s advocacy of keeping independent music financed for the bands, free for the crowd, and ferocious all around, POPFEST will be free-admission, kicking off at 4pm in the open air of Fort Strip Plaza.

Since it’s summertime, we might as well drain our creative juices! We broke our bimonthly rule to give you another issue featuring The Circle Hostel and Billabong. We got a chance to spend a few days in Zambales to immerse ourselves in the surf culture and sink our toes in the sand. We also have photos from The Cranberries concert and contributions from Alfred Marasigan. We hope everyone enjoyed their summer vacation and cheers to a productive one!

Yes, we know we are one week behind. It would be pointless to even explain why—basically, life happened—so we are apologizing for the delay. Now that that is out of the way, I introduce to you the book for Round 2 (which has won by 5 votes!): Sylvia Plath’s The Bell Jar.

Here’s a short synopsis from Wikipedia:

Esther Greenwood, a young woman from the suburbs of Boston, Massachusetts, gains a summer internship at a prominent magazine in New York City. At the time of the Rosenbergs’ execution, Esther is neither stimulated nor excited by the big city and glamorous culture and lifestyle that girls her age are expected to idolize and emulate. Instead her experiences frighten and disorient her.

Labelled as the “girl version” of J.D. Salinger’s The Catcher in the Rye for its vivid depiction of angst, The Bell Jar is in brief a story about a woman going mad.

Here we are with another All-out April Issue. When I first started Stache, it wasn’t in the original plan for us to have this issue but I realized that the summer break is the perfect time for everyone to be productive. I know it defeats the purpose of having a ‘break’ but if you want to be better at what you do, you have to practice continuously.

We received a lot of submissions from our readers and we are more than thankful for the response. I know how good it feels to get your work published for all the world to see (and thank God for the internet for making this easy) but think about the inspiration you give to the readers. Just one photo can immediately send someone out on a photowalk or simply doodle. With this issue, we hope to inspire you to create something and to spend your summer vacation working on what you love doing.

Alternate title: Pardon the cliche but we are the future, I shit you not.

We met with a group of lovely people a while ago and they are currently working on creating a company about social entrepreneurship. Social entrepreneurship is all about creating a business not to create profit but to help people, because that’s how it should be. They are targeting the youth because we are the ones who can create a gazillion ideas per second and make them happen. Our generation can’t be contented with just one label. We need to be a student-slash-blogger-slash-photographer-slash-designer-slash-whatever. This is what the slash generation is all about.

Have you heard of the ‘theory’ about 2050? They’re saying that the Philippines will be the 16th biggest economy in the world. How old will you be by that time? I’ll be 57 years old, which means I’m probably one of the people who will shape the economy of the country since I’ll be under the working class by that time. So to get to that goal of being one of the frontrunners in the global economy, we should start working on those businesses now right? I’ve always been wondering why the Filipinos are working for foreigners here in our own country. Why can’t they work for us? That’s the thing. Some of us don’t get how big the potential of our country is when it comes to having businesses because we are focused on being consumers.

This is the goal of the people we met with. This is MY goal in life. I created Stache to help people and that is social entrepreneurship. I want to get the message across that’s why I’m using Stache’s reach to communicate it. This company is currently in the works but for now, think about how you can contribute to our economy and how you can help the community with your talents.

So Maine and I have decided that, for Book One, the club will be reading The Catcher in The Rye by J.D. Salinger. We would have asked for your suggestions, but since this is the club’s first book, and we are not yet sure whether or not this venture would be a success, we chose to pick the first book ourselves. Consider this a dry run of sorts; besides, one cannot go wrong with a classic. (Come next month, and you are still with us, the books to be read are up to you.)

So there you have it. The Ask and Submit buttons are functioning, so feel free to post your reading progresses, quotes you particularly liked, thoughts on the chapters, pictures, and whatnot.

THE MAINE is a talented young band that is one of the fastest-selling acts around the globe today hailing from Tempe, Arizona. The band is comprised of John O’Callghan on lead vocals and guitar, Kennedy Brock on rhythm guitar and backing vocals, Jared Monaco on lead guitar, Patrick Kirch on drum and Garrett Nickelsen on bass guitar.

The Maine was founded by Nickelsen and Kirch November of 2006. The band’s name was inspired from the song “Coast of Maine” by Ivory. O’Callaghan joined soon through auditions for the band with no prior singing experience whatsoever, alongside former members Ryan Osterman and Alex Ross. Together they release the EP Stay Up, Get Down. Shortly thereafter Ryan and Alex left for unknown reasons, but were replaced with Brock and Monaco. The Maine got major label attention, but eventually signed with Fearless Records and on December 11, 2007 made their debut with a five song EP entitled The Way We Talk.

Their debut full-length record, Can’t Stop, Won’t Stop, was released in 2008. Their subsequent offering was a holiday EP in December 2008 titled …And a Happy New Year. The EP included three original tracks plus a cover of the Wham! classic “Last Christmas.” In 2009, the band signed to Warner Bros. Records.

On July 13, 2010, The Maine released their sophomore full-length album, Black & White, produced by two-time Grammy Award Producer of the Year nominee Howard Benson. In November 2010, while on the Harmony Tour with Never Shout Never, The Maine and NSN had fans gather canned foods to help those in need. As a ‘thank you’ gift, both acts released a split EP entitled Split. On December 27, 2010, The Maine released the LP In Darkness and in Light on iTunes.

December of 2011 saw the worldwide release of their third album Pioneer, which featured some of their biggest hits – “My Heroine.” “Misery,” “Some Days,” and “Don’t Give Up on Us.” The album is finally available locally by exclusive distributor PULP Live Records. The album sold over 120,000 copies on its first week of release globally and peaked at no. 16 on the Billboard 200 Album Chart. “Don’t Five Up on Us” is currently the no.1 song on popular local radio station Monster Radio RX 93.1.

Upon the announcement of PULP Live World regarding the PIONEER WORLD TOUR 2012, The Maine topped the trending list of Twitter here in the Philippines. And in just days after the ticket release, all the PULP Royalty (a limited meet-and-greet pass) and Platinum tickets were sold out.

The Pioneer World Tour 2012: The Maine Live in Manila is presented by PULP Live World and KARPOS Multimedia Inc. with media partners The Philippine Star, MYX, and RX 93.1, in cooperation with SM City North Edsa Sky Dome, SM Tickets and Astroplus.

A few days ago, throwing caution to the wind, we asked you guys whether or not you wanted to participate in a book club that was yet to exist. We didn’t really know what your responses will be like, having absolutely no idea how everything would turn out, but we are really happy that we have received such positive responses.

Because a few dozen of you said “Yay!” and the team seeing this venture as generally a good idea, we are happy to announce that the book club will indeed be pushing through!

As of yet the team is still polishing everything up, but expect the official announcements and guidelines in the following days. We are really excited for the book club and we hope that you guys are, too.

Be sure to tell your friends and spread the word. Cheers for a productive summer!

UP Sigma Delta Phi is back with another event under Be One Movement. This one is called Project Bata, Magbasa Ka. On March 17, 2012, different people from different universities in the country will gather for the unveiling of a library section that they built for the children of White Cross. This will be held in Ricco Renzo Galleries, 210 Nicanor Garcia, Makati City. Don’t forget to bring one (1) coloured, hardbound children’s book with you because this will serve as your ticket to the event. The books that will be accumulated during this event will be part of the library.
